Looking back at the Boston skate scene during the early nineties I feel very fortunate to have been “in the right place at the right time” so to speak. Prior to 1994 Boston and it skaters had seen their fair share of coverage, but the majority of what was featured in the mags and videos seemed to come out of the west coast. 1995 through 1998 was a major turning point for Boston’s scene. During that time Boston was featured in numerous articles in Transworld, Slap, Thrasher and Big Brother. Numerous videos featured Boston skaters and Boston spots. Many of the up-and-coming skaters were getting noticed on a national and global level and many high profile pros and ams were making frequent trips to skate in the city and a few of them even took up semi-permanent residency. “Messin’ Around” which was produced in 1998, captured a snap shot of this period and preserved it for future generations. When I teamed up with Matt Landon (3d innovations) to make the video our goal was very simple. We just wanted a video that featured the handful of skaters Matt was sponsoring through 3d and his skate shop – Hanger 18. Once we got started and the word got out we were making a video it evolved into a massive group effort, involving many more people than we had ever imagined. In the end, after many long nights of editing we had a video that include most of the skaters that helped make the Boston scene happen…Now, ten years later we’re re-releasing “Messin’ Around” on DVD as a tribute to that time and place and all the people who helped make it possible.
